Proposed closure of Stockton Heath Library

Current proposals will mean the closure of Stockton Heath library which would mean no library in South Warrington. Could you please let me know your view on this and if you also oppose the closure of the library, let me know how you propose to challenge this so we can keep the library open? Thank you.

NIC, I see no reason why the library shouldn’t continue to be stocked by WBC or why specialist services could not be provided by ’phone or e-mail.

My suggestion of volunteers staffing the library was to ensure that Stockton Heath would maintain a vital service.

I don;t know if this has been looked at as a viable alternative. From a personal point of view, my concern with a voluntary service is that it will be reliant on donations so it will not be restocked so you will not get the new stock that you get from a library. You would also not have access to the thousands of books that are currently available across a local authority wide library. I think that many volunteer-run libraries are reliant on donations to keep the premises open so people who cannot afford to pay a user charge will be excluded – and these are often the people most in need of the library service. You also lose out on the knowledge, expertise and support of professional librarians which I believe is incredibly valuable to any library. And in terms of volunteers, I know from personal experience that it is incredibly hard to find volunteers – over recent years I have been involved in a school’s PTA, the guiding, scouting and rugby coaching. In every one of these activities, it has proved extremely difficult to find volunteers even for one day, let alone to make an ongoing commitment.

There are many retired people in Stockton Heath who are well capable of providing a volunteer service to keep the library open. Has anyone considered this option?
